PURPOSE OF THE QUALIFICATION OVERVIEW

The FETC in Plant Production: NQF Level 4 is designed to meet the needs of those learners both employed or unemployed, who are already involved or wish to become involved in the field of agriculture and food security. This qualification will form the basis for learners to extend their learning into more specialised areas of plant production and provides the basis of the establishment of sustainable farming operations through the inclusion of a wide spectrum of competencies required by farmers in South Africa.

Competent qualifying learners in this qualification will oversee quality agricultural products in Plant Production, while also improving the overall agricultural process and gaining access to local, national, and international agricultural markets.

QUALIFICATION OVERVIEW

This qualification is available as a 12-month Learnership or a 6-month Skills Programme comprised of four modules each. Each module lasts 10 days. A module is scheduled every month or every two months. In between the learners need to apply what they have learnt and prepare their Portfolios of Evidence. The programme can be offered to employees in a workplace (onsite) or as a public course.

KEY LEARNING OUTCOMES.

At the completion of this qualification delegates will be able to:

  • Manage supervisors and work teams while carrying out agricultural activities relevant to plant production.
  • Oversee the implementation of a wide range of procedures and will be able to ensure the relevant safety, quality, hygiene and technical standards as applicable within the industry.
  • Actively participate in the Primary Agricultural Sector through the production of quality agricultural products, enhancing the overall agricultural process and gain opportunities to access local, national and international agricultural markets.
  • Become economically active in farming practices that will have a direct impact on Local Economic Development through the production of food, the improvement of household food security and access to mainstream agriculture.
  • Guide and direct others in terms of the planning, implementation and control of development projects within a Plant Production context.
  • Extend learning and practice into other sub-fields such as Animal Production and Mixed Farming.
